Building a New Urbanism: Synthesis of Classical & Vernacular Urbanism

  • Walsh Family Hall of Architecture 114 Notre Dame, IN (map)

Two leading urban designers, Douglas Duany, and Ben Pentreath, will discuss the balance between the classical and the vernacular in New Urbanism. There is a common thread in New Urbanism of recognizing the need for walkable, mixed-used neighborhoods with a variety of housing options, but there is still a tremendous number of lessons to be learned for good design. This discussion will explore the dynamic between order and regularity with organic and vernacular urban strategies. The event will be in person for Notre Dame students and faculty, as well as a virtual meeting option.
