Sunday, February 15 — Arrival in Guatemala
Travelers fly into La Aurora International Airport (GUA), which is outside the capital, Guatemala City. Transfer to Antigua hotel by private van.
Check into the Santo Domingo Hotel in Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage town dating back 480 years, founded in 1542.
Evening welcome dinner at Mesón Panza Verde.
Monday, February 16 — Antigua
Breakfast at the hotel. A full day architectural tour of Antigua and its Spanish Colonial architecture with local architect and ICAA member and fellow Rodrigo Bollat Montenegro. Our tour includes visits to a selection of private homes in Antigua and the historic house museum Casa Popenoe (early 20th Century view below left; restored courtyard today). Lunch in a local restaurant. Touring continues this afternoon. Group dinner in Antigua.
Tuesday, February 17 — Antigua
Breakfast at the hotel. Another full day architectural tour of Antigua with architect Rodrigo Bollat Montenegro. Our tour includes visits to the many churches including the San Francisco, La Merced (pictured below) and the Santa Clara Convent. Lunch in a local restaurant and to end the day an optional rum tasting. Optional afternoon tour of Caoba Window and Door Factory. Group dinner in Antigua.
Wednesday, February 18 — Antigua & Surroundings
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning touring. Capuchinas Church and Convent (image near right). Then to visit local villages and coffee farms including Finca Carmona and the Bishop’s Palace and church at San Juan Del Obispo (image far right). Lunch in the mountains with stunning views of the volcano. Back in Antigua we will have a tour of textile designer Mitchell Denburg’s studio, where he creates hand woven bespoke rugs. Dinner on your own.
Visit to a private house and garden. This property has been featured in a book on Guatemala gardens and interiors.
Thursday, February 19 — Cayalá
Breakfast at the hotel and check-out. Depart for Cayala and check into to the AC Hotel by Marriott for a two-night stay.
Private tour of the planned city of Cayala, designed under the direction of the architect and urban planner Leon Krier. We will be with Rodrigo Bollat Montenegro, along with the co-founder of Estudio Urbano architect Maria Sanchez. Maria and her husband Pedro Pablo Godoy Barrios have been at the helm of Cayala’s design together with Leon Krier and have designed their own home, which is inspired by local Guatemalan traditions incorporating classical architecture. We will tour this planned city’s public spaces along with a few private homes. Lunch included.
Drinks at the home of Estudio Urbano founders Maria and Pedro, followed by a group dinner.
Friday, February 20 — Tikal & Return
Depart the hotel for the airport. Breakfast boxes on board the plane. Depart by private plane to Flores where we connect to a private transport to the great Mayan complex of Tikal. A full day visit to and lunch in Tikal. Return by private plane, and to the AC Marriotte Hotel for our last night in Guatemala. Group dinner in Cayala.
Saturday, February 21 — Departures
Breakfast at the hotel.
Private transfers to the airport for return flights home.
